Sex, secrets and video blogs with a Casio keyboard beat. This isn’t your typical high school debate team! Stephen Karam creates a hilarious and revealing portrait of the borderland between late adolescence and early adulthood in this clever comedy about the life of the un-average American teenager. Recommended for ages 16 and up. Language. Play deals with issues of sexuality, alcohol, abortion and internet privacy.

At the Kitchen Theatre we’re pretty excited! Stephen Karam’s comedy, directed by Samuel Buggeln opens on the Main Stage next week!

About 48 hearty souls ventured out into the snow and wind to join us at the Kitchen tonight for the second preview of SPEECH & DEBATE. If you came out your journey was made all the more worthwhile by the beautiful spread laid out by Planned Parenthood’s Sexuality Education & Advocacy program. Patrons had a chance to mingle, eat, drink and check out some literature about all of the wonderful programs that Planned Parenthood has rolling. After an incredible, energetic show it was great to get insight from Planned Parenthood Staff and Board in the talk-back. We are looking forward to doing more partnerships like this in the future. Thanks to Maureen Kelly at Planned Parenthood and all of you fabulous die-hard theater people for a wonderful evening.

Get your tickets soon folks. Still a few seats open on the preview Wednesday 2/24 and Thursday 2/25 – Friday is just about sold out (there were three seats left earlier today). Don’t forget that if you come on Thursday Night 2/25 there is a pre-show reception hosted by the Sexuality Education and Advocacy Program of Planned Parenthood beginning at 6:00 – so come early!

Eight former editors of The Ithaca High School Tattler gained a small victory in their fight for First Amendment rights in high school journalism: On Jan. 26., U.S. District Judge Norman Mordue issued a decision allowing an appeal of his earlier ruling that dismissed some of the students’ claims. Rehearsals are going great and this group is just awaiting an audience to complete the circle. I snapped a few rehearsal photos – costumes are not complete here and there is no lighting – but you get the idea. This play is a lot of fun!

Saw the run through on Sunday. Eight teens from around the county attended. (Thanks to the cast for the having guests so early in the rehearsal process) Teens had lots of great things to say about the play—most important was how they thought the play rang true to their own experiences. Lots of big laughs during the performance and then concentrated silence—nice.  Rachel Lampert
